What materials are used to make mats
Knowing the characteristics of different materials, you can at least roughly imagine how the mat will feel during exercise. At the same time, there is no guarantee that the product will be of high quality, even if it is made of 100% natural polymer and is not cheap.
Because of the difference in composition and manufacturing techniques, two models of the same material may differ greatly in durability, odor and anti-slip properties.
Polyvinyl chloride
One of the most popular options. Most cheap mats are made of PVC, although there are also quite expensive models. For example, from Manduka or Reebok, a popular yoga brand.
Even cheap mats can provide a good grip on the floor, so that the product will not move with you during exercises. However, most models can’t provide the same good grip on your hands. Once your palms get wet from sweat, they will start to ride on the PVC surface.
Polyethylene foam
This material is used to make hiking mats, so-called foams. Some manufacturers indicate that such models can be used for training.
It is indeed possible to exercise on them. For example, if you are going to do exercises in nature, laying the mat on the grass wet from dew. Or throw a mat on the floor to make it softer to pump your abs.
