According to the publication of experts, people have lost control over thinning ice shelves, which in essence represent ice ridges on the edges of the main ice sheet, which perform a stabilizing role, restraining the descent of glaciers into the ocean.
It is noted that ice loss in the region has been increasing rapidly over the past decades, and according to scientists, the vast West Antarctic ice sheet, which contains enough water to raise ocean levels by several meters, is approaching its point of no return.
In the new study, the scientists made a computer model that showed that faster melting of ice shelves has already become inevitable in the coming years as ocean temperature readings increase.
