Alpine slopes in Switzerland are overgrown with cacti

However, until recently their spread was hindered by cold and snowy winters. Now, with the retreat of the snow line in the mountainous area, nine species of cactus have grown at once on southern slopes that receive ample sunlight and warmth.

The expansion of opuntias worries the authorities because they are crowding out vulnerable endemic plants on protected lands.
